My apologies in allege for a churned metaphors in a title of this post. It wouldn’t have been my choice if we were inventing metaphors, though in this box I’m not, I’m simply flitting along metaphors.

Following a better-than-expected mercantile Q2 report this afternoon by Linux operating complement and collection businessman Red Hat (RHT), CEO Jim Whitehurst was kind adequate to take a few moments to speak with me about a formula though also about how his association is surpassing in “cloud” computing.

In remarks to me by phone,  following a contention call with analysts, Whitehurst pronounced that a Linux operating complement continues to be a season of choice for building those hosted computing facilities. Red Hat adds a collection and applications to Linux, such as Java Enterprise Edition deployment tools. (Oracle (ORCL) is a tangible owners of a Java patents and trademarks and licenses a technology. Whitehurst says a companies continue to have a good operative attribute around Java.)

Whitehurst also mentioned “CloudForms,” that will be a apparatus for handling applications deployed in a hosted computing environment. That product is in trials now and is approaching to be generally accessible someday this mercantile year.

I also asked Whitehurst about Microsoft’s (MSFT) contention final week of a possess cloud collection and services during a BUILD conference. Some of a analysts who attended that eventuality came divided tender with Microsoft’s efforts to couple together Windows 8 on customer devices, a .Net horizon for focus development, and a Azure hosting service, not to discuss Microsoft’s several server products.

Some consider a new roadmap for developers could assistance Microsoft uncover larger swell in cloud computing. (See for instance a rather certain remarks final week by Nomura’s Rick Sherlund.)

Whitehurst insists it’s “too little, too late”:

Developers have in ubiquitous changed past a Microsoft stack. If we go to Silicon Valley and speak to any try capitalist, and speak to any startup about what are they using on, they’re using on an open-source stack. Certainly they [Microsoft] have done swell with what they are doing, though a universe has changed on, on a growth side, to open source platforms. So many other companies are descending all over themselves to contend they are open source, including VMWare (VMW), and others. But as distant as Microsoft, that boat has sailed.
